Delightful Day in Dakar

Today was a full but fun day! I was at breakfast at 6 AM and wasn't finished with the day until 8 PM. We had three learning sessions today about customs, safety, and teaching in our host communities. We went to lunch at an incredible seafood restaurant right on the beach! The shrimp were so fresh and yummy. Then we took our bus to the Renaissance Monument. You begin by climbing up all of the stairs. At the top, you can see the monument. It features a muscular African man that has broken his slave chains, a woman, and their baby. It is the tallest monument in Senegal. Our group went into the museum and admired the statues and other items. At the end of the museum tour, you take a tiny elevator up to the head of the man in the statue. It was very squishy in that elevator!
You can walk around in a circle and take in the beautiful view. One thing I'm learning here is that Senegal time is very different than time in America. We never made it to the Black History Museum, or the dinner plans we'd made due to being four hours behind schedule. Flexibility is key! I do enjoy the time that people take here to make connections and enjoy life.
Tomorrow I will be journeying to our host community where my team will be teaching and learning about life in Senegal for the next ten days.

Fun with other teacher friends!
